One of the major factors that you should take into account when choosing mascara is the type of eyelashes you already have. By buying a product that will work well with your existing lashes you will get the best results and be able to more easily achieve the look you are going for.
If you have short lashes consider looking for lengthening mascara. Long lashes can help your eyes to look more feminine and sexy while at the same time helping to open up the eye area.
Thin, sparse lashes can be beefed up using a thickener or primer. Most primers are gel based and are applied before you put on your mascara. Simply apply the primer to your lashes, allow it to dry and then apply the mascara over the top for thick, lush lashes.
Curled eyelashes can open up your eyes and make them look bigger, however not all eyelashes curl easily. If you have tried and eyelash curler and haven't gotten the results that you want or if you simply don't want to take the time to curl your eyelashes each day consider looking for a curling mascara.
If you have eyes that water a lot or your mascara tends to smudge or run you probably should consider using waterproof mascara. Waterproof mascara doesn't just keep your eyes looking great if you swim or get wet, but is more smudge resistant than non-waterproof mascara and will help keep your mascara from running or smudging during the course of the day.
When it comes to color much of it boils down to your personal preference. However, there are some general rules of thumb that you can use when choosing color.
Black mascara will give you the most drama, however if you have pale hair or skin it may be too harsh on your eyes. Plum or deep navy blue mascara is a nice softer alternative to black that still leaves your lashes highly defined and beautiful.
If you have red or auburn hair opt for brown mascara since it will work better with your natural coloring and will still give you a lot of definition in your lashes. Choose deep brown shades for more drama and lighter brown for a more natural look.
If you have very fair hair or skin look for mascara in a light brown or bronze shade. Even a light brown will be dark enough to provide you with a lot of drama without overpowering the rest of your skin and hair or looking too harsh.
To get the most impact from your mascara curl your lashes using an eyelash curler before applying the mascara. This will open up your eyes and make your lashes more noticeable.
Always use a makeup remover to take off your mascara at the end of the day. The eye area is delicate and using a remover will eliminate the need for scrubbing which can stretch the delicate skin and cause wrinkles and sagging over time.
For perfect application of your mascara always start at the very root of the lash line and gently wiggle the brush up to the tips of the lashes. You should replace your mascara every few months since it can grow bacteria and cause infections with time.
